In medical school, doctors are taught pattern recognition. Over four years of medical school and 3–4 years of residency, we learn to hone in on symptoms. If Edward has low energy, fatigue, and feels “down,” we may diagnose him as having depression. Or, if Sally is fatigued and experiences chest pain when exerting herself, combined with a general sense of feeling bad or something just not being right, we may diagnose her as having a heart attack. Recognizing patterns is the foundation of training doctors.

Unfortunately, that level of pattern recognition is where many doctors stop. What is missed, then, are the patterns that connect patterns that connect patterns.

I’ve seen this play out countless times. Patients walk away from their doctor (or a series of specialists) with 5–6 different diagnoses: depression, ADHD, concussion, irritable bowel syndrome, and insomnia. What is not recognized is that all those seemingly separate diagnoses are connected by a single, systemic dysfunction. Overwhelmed and exhausted moms are then forced to crowdsource “solutions” to the compounding diagnoses they’ve acquired — rather than recognizing and addressing the root cause.
